STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS

Spotlighting a diverse range of students on campus to show off their achievements and inspire others.

Meet Lia Addisu 👋 Lia is a second-year student majoring in computer science from Seattle, WA.

On campus, Lia is the retention and recruitment coordinator for the Black Women of Achievement (BWA). The goal of BWA is to provide social, cultural, educational, and physical development to women of color, specifically African American women, but not limited to. BWA hosts fun events like Ethnic Hair Care Day—one Lia’s personal favorites—where BWA gives away hair products ranging from simple hair ties to blow dryers with different attachments. Lia joined the BWA board because "I wanted to be a part of the magic of creating a space for other Black women to enjoy," she said. "I feel like I found community at the Multicultural Center (MCC). I met a lot of new people at the MCC and BWA office alone, and I now consider a few of them to be my good friends."

Lia's advice to fellow students is, “explore your passions and maybe join a club you never thought you’d join; you never know what might come of it.

Meet Luke Southall 👋 Luke is a third-year student majoring in advertising and public relations with a minor in business administration from Hood River, OR.

Luke is director of project management at Allen Hall Advertising, a student-led agency that offers real-world advertising experience. He works with each project manager on the team to ensure quality work for an array of clients throughout Eugene. “I’ve gotten to lead a team of stellar project managers and play a role in AHA’s rebrand alongside a talented cohort of directors," he said. "It’s a great feeling to be surrounded by people you can look up to.”

He is also co-director of The Rising Project, a creative climate studio that merges advertising with science communication to advocate climate awareness. In addition, Luke is president of the UO Swim Club and a presidential scholar. “I came to Oregon looking for organizations I was passionate about and I found my community along with them," he said.

Luke’s message to fellow Ducks is to “believe the UO tour guides when they say, 'if there’s something you’re excited about, there’s probably a place for it.”
